The 44th Golden Horse Awards

The show was beautifully opened by Lee Hom and the orchestra team, playing scores from past films in the chinese film industry. And I macam hear someone screaming. Hmmmm.

The fact is Lust • Caution (色，戒) had the most nominations for the awards (11 nominations), they still is the big winner of the night! And brought home six golden horses! I’m not sure whether they are worth taking those horses back home as I have not seen the film. And people said that their sex scenes makes the film popular. Oh, wait. I don’t wanna watch already. They won all the BIG BIG awards including for Best Director, Best Actor and Best Feature Film. In my opinion, all big awards go to the film because if Ang Lee (李安) lost, he’ll have no place for his face to put. Plus, HE IS A TAIWANESE! So, the result is not surprising.

The Home Song Stories (意) had seven nominations but disappointingly, the film was only awarded two horses. One of it was for Best Leading Actress (Joan Chen) which was quite surprising because everyone thought Tang Wei (湯唯) is going to win. Why they don’t give it to Tang Wei then? One of the reason is because she got an award for Best New Performer! That’s why they gave the Best Leading Actress award to someone else. So nice of them (konon).

How about Jay Chou’s self-directed film Secret (不能說的 • 祕密)? They won three horses out of five nominations including yes, his Secret song for Best Original Film Song. I think not bad lo for his first self-direct film. He was not present for the show because he was preparing for his concert in Hong Kong.

And oh, oh. When awarding the award for Best Film Song, all the nomination songs was performed individually by a really popular singer now in Taiwan called Xiao Jing Teng (蕭敬騰). He performed really well except that his singing was a bit too strong. And he sings better than the original and I am refering to Jay Chou. He became popular because of his success in this Taiwan singing competition show called Million Star (超級星光大道). And this show has become a hit in Malaysia recently. It’s show on Astro AEC every Sunday 8 pm.

Did I say Gurmit Singh aka Phua Chu Kang was nominated for Best Leading Actor for Just Follow Law? No? I also didn’t know he was nominated until a few days ago. Well done to him although he went back empty handed.

Cyril Takayama came to perform his own magic tricks too! If you don’t know him, he’s a very popular illusionist in Japan!

I think one of the highlights was when Ang Lee and Sandra Wu (吳君如) was supposed to present the awards for Best Leading Actor. After announcing the nominees, Ang Lee expressed how he wants Tony Leung (梁朝偉) to win (Why? Tony Leung is the leading actor for Lust • Caution dammit!). Then Sandra Wu told Lee that he don’t have to see the result anymore and to just take the award without looking at the result (Leung didn’t show up for the award you see. So Lee is supposed to take the award for Leung if he wins). But Lee thought she was crazy and Wu started to tear the result envelope into pieces!! Ohmigosh! You should see Ang Lee’s face!! He hurriedly picked up all the pieces and link them back. No surprise! Tony Leung won. What a *whew* sight!

So the show ended with the film Lust • Caution (色，戒) bringing home those horses back for Best Feature Film!
